Indifference to lives

Why have we become so indifferent about people losing lives that all we care for is just numbers?

Year after year, calamity after calamity we resort to counting corpses and thats all we do about it until such time comes the next year. Are governments meant only to make a note of statistics and announce petty monies in the name of ex-gratias? Is public safety a mere theoretical subject than an objective necessity for us?

There is no more insult to the departed souls than merely counting each one of their remains as one among the herd and pay lip service to the causes of their demise. I am sure the same old story is going to be repeated next year and in a week from now there probably wouldn't even be a passing reference to the calamity that is now affecting people of 15 districts in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

When year after year people face similar threats and there are no steps taken to protect them from similar dangers the following year, the state is failing not just the people but in fact failing humanity making demons out of ourselves.
