Disparity in constituencies per population

Here is a concept I don't quite understand:

Andhra Pradesh, that has a population of around 8 crores has a legislative assembly with 294 MLAs.

Maharashtra, that has a population of around 10 crores has a legislative assembly strength of 288!!

If we look at the size of the states, still Maharashtra is larger in area than Andhra Pradesh.

Then why the difference, even after delimitation?
